Governing Council
New Governing Council Members
DEAP is seeking new members to serve on the DEAP Governing Council
DEAP’s Governing Council is made up of individuals with a commitment to supporting the realization of DEAP’s mission and vision. The Governing Council hosts an open meeting at least once a month with the school’s administrator(s), business management team, school staff and community members. While the GC is not involved in the day to day operations of the school, they are responsible for evaluating, hiring and holding the head administrator accountable, as well as the financial health of this public charter school. New GC members are required to complete 10 hours of state-provided training in their first year, and 8 hours of training each year after. Governing Council members may be asked to serve on various leadership committees (finance & audit, facilities, curriculum, etc.) based on their areas of interest and expertise. GC members serve a term of 4 years and can serve consecutive terms if desired.
DEAP is looking to grow our Governing Council and is seeking members that are:
- Advocates for Indigenous Families & Children
- Desire to connect and strengthen Native education, especially on the Diné Nation
- Committed to attend monthly meetings (due to COVID-19, most are held via zoom, but future meetings may take place in person)
- No compensation, service is voluntary
- Willingness to travel for training and/or state meetings
If you are interested, please send a letter of interest to kdbegay@deapschool.org.

Annual Open Meetings Act Compliance Statement
In accordance with the New Mexico Open Meetings Act (OMA), DEAP School remains committed to ensuring transparency and public participation in the decision-making process. To comply with OMA, the following practices are observed:
1. Public Notice of Meetings:
DEAP provides public notice of all meetings of the Governing Council, including the date, time, location, and a proposed agenda. The notice is published in a timely manner, at least 72 hours prior to the meeting, in compliance with Section 10-15-1(D) of the Act. Notices are posted at DEAP’s main office, on the school’s website, and other community locations as necessary.
2. Meeting Accessibility:
All Governing Council meetings are open to the public, except in cases where the meeting falls under the exceptions for executive sessions as outlined in Section 10-15-1(H) of the OMA. Meetings are held in locations that are accessible to the general public, ensuring compliance with accessibility standards.
3. Meeting Agendas and Minutes:
Agendas for all regular meetings are made available to the public at least 72 hours before the meeting and are posted alongside meeting notices. Meeting minutes are recorded, made available for public review, and retained as official records, reflecting actions taken by the Governing Council in compliance with Section 10-15-1(G) of the OMA.
4. Public Participation:
DEAP encourages community engagement and provides opportunities for the public to attend and participate in open meetings. Time is allotted for public comment during each meeting, in alignment with the council’s procedures for conducting business.
5. Executive Sessions:
Executive sessions are held only when necessary and limited to the subjects permitted under Section 10-15-1(H) of the OMA, such as personnel matters, legal issues, and student-specific matters. The session’s purpose is announced publicly, and the results are disclosed as required by law.
DEAP School will continue to adhere to the provisions of the Open Meetings Act to promote transparency, accountability, and community involvement in its governance.
