Academics

Mission Statement

As a result of a DEAP education, students will be able to use their cultural, vocational and academic skills to analyze their surroundings in order to plan the transformation of their community and their world, live a healthy life and use the tools they were taught to achieve holistic wellness, use their understanding of identity, and its impact on local and global communities to promote the restoration and perpetuation of Diné culture, and honor the history and the legacy of the DZIŁ DITŁ'OOÍ  area by consciously balancing the needs of the land with the needs of the people.

Highlights of a DEAP Education

Small Classes: We have small class sizes where each student is given the support they need to succeed

Advisory: 10-13 students are paired with a DEAP mentor to create a school "family". The advisor commits to work with student families so all students are successful

Leadership Skills: Through DEAP's Service Learning for Community Action, students gain leadership and organization skills by planning, taking action and reflecting on their learning.

Hands-on Learning: DEAP's approach to learning is hands-on. Rather than solely reading or completing worksheets, students will learn by doing and using all their senses to access knowledge.

Land Based Learning: Land Based Learning education provides students with opportunities to apply science, math, technology and engineering skills in a meaningful and relevant way. It also helps students to build stronger connections to land and as a result a stronger relationship with self, plants, animals and the cycles of transformation.

Empowerment through Culture: DEAP values cultural knowledge and commits to honoring & preserving it through language courses, cultural dances, songs, and Native studies courses.

Wellness & Perseverance Philosophy: We want our students to be healthy. Therefore, we are focused on providing students with the skills and resources to understand, plan, take action and reflect on their physical, mental, spiritual and socio-emotional wellness.

College & Career Readiness: DEAP curriculum is designed to give students the skills they need to apply to college or other career options. We have high expectations of our students and commit to rigor and growth in all areas.

Authentic Family and Community Involvement: DEAP values the power and voices of families and community. DEAP has built community and family events into our school year. Some events include Service Days, Grandparent Days, Feast Days, and more.
